President Barrow Declares Eid-ul Fitr a Public Holiday

As Muslims look forward to the end of the Holy Month of Ramadan, President Adama Barrow is pleased to declare the Feast of Eid-ul-Fitr, locally called Koriteh, a public holiday.

As the precise timing of Eid depends on the sighting of the moon, this will determine the exact dates for the public holiday or holidays. Should Eid fall on Sunday the 25th of June, then Monday the 26th of June will be a public holiday. Should Eid, however, fall on Monday the 26th of the month, then Monday the 26th and Tuesday the 27th of June will be public holidays. This will allow public servants to travel to and from their communities of origin to celebrate with their families.

Eid-ul-Fitr is celebrated by Muslims worldwide. Ramadan entails twenty-nine or thirty days of fasting during Holy Month. Muslims traditionally celebrate with their families, friends and neighbours and share goodwill. It is also customary, on the early morning of Eid-ul Fitr, for Muslims to give arms in the form of the staple food in their communities to the less fortunate.

The President, on behalf of the First Family, extends their very best wishes of Eid-ul-Fitr to all.
